Radicals (like reactive oxygen and nitrogen species) have an unpaired valence electron. This configuration is inherently unstable, and as they say, nature abhors a vacuum. So what radicals do is they steal an electron from surrounding molecules to complete the pair. This process is called an oxidation-reduction reaction, or redox for short. Rusting of iron is a redox reaction; oxygen reacts with iron and makes iron oxide. So is combustion; air and fuel and heat make the fuel donate electrons to the oxidizer, and the process is exothermic and makes heat and a vapor layer and light, and it just keeps going until the fuel is consumed. Rust, fire, oxidative stress. It's all the same exact thing. Lipids in the body, like the lipids that line cell membranes, as well as other types of oils like polyunsaturated fatty acids, can also "rust" when exposed to radicals. The products of these reactions are called lipid hydroperoxides, and the body hates them and treats them like foreign objects with an inflammation reaction, much like any other foreign object (just like asbestos, for instance).
As a matter of fact, they promote the formation of autoantibodies due to what are called oxidation-specific epitopes. The oxidized fats are treated the same way as any foreign microbe, with antibodies sent to attack and neutralize them so leukocytes can pick 'em up and break 'em down. This actually happens a lot in lupus, because lupus promotes neutrophilia and NETosis (just like COVID-19), which generates a lot of radicals, which oxidize a lot of fats, so you end up with anti-cardiolipin antibodies, anti-phospholipid antibodies (a.k.a. "Lupus anticoagulant"), and so on. This is bad, because those antibodies also react with and attack good lipids, like the ones that line your own cells. The plasma membrane of cells is a double wall of phosphate and fatty acid units that automatically arrange in that configuration due to hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions.
When cells are injured by ionizing radiation, they release a lot of radicals.
Walter is pretty much dead-on accurate about this. It's the exact same process as what you see in a COVID-19 infection, with the same exact consequences for the cells. The only thing that differs is the root cause. In ionizing radiation, it's because of injury to the cells causing them to generate radicals, as well as direct radiolysis generating radicals. Ionizing radiation stresses cells a lot and damages their chromosomes, organelles, and membranes, impairing protein synthesis. It's like being hit by a hailstorm of teeny, tiny, invisible bullets.
In either case, even though the root cause is different, radicals are generated and they go on to cause serious damage. The etiology overlaps, though. What this means is that someone with an active COVID-19 infection would, for instance, have a contraindication for radiotherapy for cancer; if they went ahead and went under the gamma knife while sick with COVID-19, they'd have radicals on top of radicals and lots of tissue damage. It's possible. The vax wouldn't generate the same viroporins that the virus has (which behave like calcium ion channels), but it might do different things that trigger oxidative stress. They've been pulling great big amyloid fibrin clots out of cadavers after people had the vax and died. Amyloid, itself, promotes ROS generation and inflammation. Those things tend to go hand-in-hand, really, because leukocytes use ROS to fight infections. The body's first-line response to bacterial infection is to send neutrophils. If you look back at Katalin Kariko's research into pseudouridylated and synthetically-capped mRNA, what you'll find is that they tested TLR7/8 responses versus normal mRNA and then versus the pseudouridylated and synthetically capped mRNA and determined that TLR7/8 response was reduced, but here's the thing; they didn't design the experiment such that they could introduce a TLR7/8 agonist and check and see if the mRNA was behaving like a TLR inhibitor. They just assumed that it "evaded" the TLRs.
